Most cooks appreciate every scrap of storage space allotted to their kitchen, big or small. Packing all your kitchen goods together in a pantry can really streamline your organizing and post-grocery shopping routine.
During the post-war building boom, pantries fell out of favor. It was thought that the new built-in cabinetry would substitute, eliminating the need for a pantry, but thinking has now changed.
A pantry can be created anywhere. A hall closet for example. Entryways and enclosed lean-to stoops adjacent to the kitchen often have unused wall space that can hold shelves. Typical is a pantry/mudroom that you pass through on your way from the kitchen to the garage or back door.
It should be large enough to hold at least a week’s worth of groceries, and close enough to the kitchen
to be easily accessed. Organization is usually more important than size alone. A well-designed small pantry will usually provide better, more convenient and more functional storage than a poorly designed large pantry. A pantry with good visibility and accessibility is one in which everything in the pantry is immediately visible and easily reached and removed without moving anything else out of the way.
